Great China Resources

Greetings!

One of the most important factors for success in any international context is familiarity with the main social, political and historical events for that society. Why? Because history has helped shape the way people think!

If you are serious about working with the Chinese, investing time in research will supercharge your training efforts and substantially increase the return on your investment of professional development time and money.

Pick a resource, start with an hour per week, and watch your " China competence" build.  Combine this with a great training or coaching program and reap the rewards of a competitive edge.

Our own Dr. Jian Li will teach two adult courses on China at SMU this month. Check them out in the "Upcoming Events" box at left.

Chinese Reality TV

As in the U.S. , Chinese television is now rife with reality shows. James Fallows of Atlantic Monthly profiles one of those shows, designed to teach entrepreneurial skills.

After you read the article, take a look at the video clips including one team's shot at teaching elementary school children to drink milk - still a strange and unfamiliar substance to many in China .

China Road : A Journey into the Future of a Rising Power     by Bob Gifford, 2007, Random House

A highly readable and informative book on what is happening in China . The author, a National Public Radio China correspondent from 1999 to 2005, wrote this book after journeying six weeks and 3000 miles, speaking with hundreds of Chinese people, from "hookers to truckers". What the book lacks in academic depth is compensated for in its vivid, insightful journalistic impression of China today.

China - A New History
by John King Fairbank and Merle Goldman, 2006. Harvard University Press

John Fairbank is a highly respected scholar of Chinese history and culture. The main text by Fairbank covers China from its pre-history to 1976. The last chapter, "The Post-Mao Reform Era", is written by Merle Goldman, a China expert and student of Fairbank's. With a comparative perspective and an excellent bibliography, it is a good introduction to Chinese history and culture and can serve both as a textbook and a general reference book on China .

The China Executive: Marrying Western and Chinese Strengths to Generate Profitability from Your Investment in China    by Wei Wang, 2006

Having studied and worked both in China and the West, Wang is one of few truly bi-cultural persons who understands how Chinese think and behave differently from Westerners. The book is a practical guide to narrow the cultural divide between China and the West. This is an outstanding book that combines theory with practical solutions for doing business in China and beyond.

One Billion Customers: Lessons from the Front Lines of Doing Business in China   by James McGregor, 2005
